Site History:
Marland Reclamation Ltd, our sister company, was tasked to remediate a former marl pit and landfill site suitable for residential development.
Site Constraints:
The main problem Marland Reclamation had to overcome was the existence of methane gases, a by-product of the biodegradable material deposited in the pit. Due to the ground build up of methane, a series of aspiromatic-type rotating cowls were strategically placed around the site. The gradual release of the gas through these bore holes prevents any potentially harmful pressure build-up.
As it would have proven too costly to treat the contaminated land in the original marl pit, it was decided to isolate and contain this area in order to protect the remainder of the site. A membrane was inserted around the outside of the pit and a clay cap placed on top, which was covered in top soil.
Development Proposals:
After three months spent preparing the site, followed by nine months of construction, the £2.6 million project, undertaken by Marland Reclamation, transformed the site into a popular residential development, including Ryland View Nursing Home, offering private accomodation in its five 30 bed units for a total of 150 residents.
